How to Play Blackjack

Blackjack or 21, is played with 1-8 standard 52 card decks. All cards are ranked 2 through 10 and are scored based on the value of the card. All face cards are worth 10 points, and Aces can be worth either 1 or 11 points. The goal of the game is to get as close to 21 points as possible without going over, called “Busting”. The best possible hand is an ace and any 10-point card, called a “Blackjack”. A Winning Blackjack pays 1.5 to 1; so if you bet $10, you would win $15 on a winning Blackjack. If both player and dealer have a Blackjack the bet is a tie, known as a “Push”, and all bets are returned. All other player winning hands pay even money. The player wins if his hand has more points than the dealer, without going over 21. If either the player or dealer go over 21 it is a Bust and automatically loses. If the player and dealer tie the bet is a Push.

Play begins with each player placing a bet, the amount of the bet controlled only by the table limits. The dealer then give each player and himself two cards. Player cards are dealt face up, while one dealer card is dealt face up and the other face down. If the dealer has a Ten point card or an Ace with his one showing card, he will check to see if he has a Blackjack. If so, all player bets are lost with the expection of player Blackjacks which result in a Push. In situations where the dealers showing card is an Ace, players have the option to buy “Insurance”, placing a seperate bet that the dealer does have Blackjack. If the dealer does in fact have Blackjack, the Insurance bet pays 2 to 1. If not, then the seperate Insurance bet is lost and play continues as normal with all initial bets unaffected. Please note that the house advantage on insurance bets is over 7%.

When the dealer does not have Blackjack, play proceeds, and each player in turn from the dealers left to right has the following options:

Stand: If the player is satisfied with his hand, he can Stand.

Hit: Players can request another card (Hit), and can continue Hitting until they decide to Stand, or go over 21 and Bust.

Double Down: If a player thinks he needs one and only one more card, then he can decide to “Double Down”, and double his initial wager. The player is then dealt one and only one more card. He may not hit again after doubling. This option is only offered on the first two cards, and sometimes on the first two cards after Splitting.

Split: If a players 2 dealt cards are the same value, the he may choose to “Split” the cards into 2 seperate hands. The player must make a new wager equal to his original wager on the 2nd hand. Doubling Down after splitting is usually but not always allowed.

Surrender: A handful of online casinos offer the option to “Surrender” after receiving your first 2 cards. If the player does not like his hand, he may Surrender his cards and receive back half of his initial wager.

After all players have completed their hands, the dealer wil play his hand. The dealer Must play his hand according to the preset house rules. Generally, the dealer must Hit on all hands of less then 17, and Stand on all hands of 17 or more. If the dealers Busts, all hands excluding those that have already busted are paid even money.
